Top South African cyclist Gustav Basson, 23, is in intensive care in Middelburg after being involved in a car accident on Wednesday evening, it was announced today.
The TEG Procycling rider, who recently won the Challenge International du Sahara Marocain in Morocco, suffered a broken upper right femur.
According to the statement doctors are waiting for the swelling to go down and will then operate on Basson, who also won the sprinter’s jersey at this year’s Tour of Good Hope.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Gustav Basson, one of our up and coming rising stars,” said Craig Bezuidenhout of Safety Initiative Road Rangers in a social media post.
“We wish him a speedy and successful recovery.”
