South African road champion Daryl Impey won stage nine of the Tour de France in Brioude today.
The 34-year-old beat Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal) in a two-man sprint, with Jan Tratnik (Bahrain-Merida) placing third on the 170.5km stage from Saint-Etienne.
It was Impey’s first stage win in the La Grande Boucle and the first for Mitchelton-Scott in more than three years.
“I’ve been imagining that emotion on the finish line for a long time, so it’s fantastic to win at this level,” said Impey, who moved up to 42nd position in the general classification.
“The last Tour de France stage victory for South Africa I think was Robbie Hunter in 2007. It’s been a long time between drinks – to win on Bastille Day, that’s fantastic. That’s a magic memory.”
Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) retained the yellow jersey ahead of Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) and Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ).
