Mitchelton-Scott’s Simon Yates claimed his second Tour de France stage win in Foix today.
The 26-year-old British rider took the 15th stage comfortably, with Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) claiming second, 30 seconds down. Mikel Landa (Movistar) secured the third spot.
“Today was the other day that I would have had a chance, so nothing really changed for me,” said the stage winner.
“I was just taking it with both hands. Adam [Yates] was not really great yesterday, but he’s a great rider and he’ll be back. No worries about that.”
Yates was part of a 36-man breakaway in the 185km stage, which started in Limoux and featured another summit finish.
Twenty riders were dropped from this group 65km in, which left a 16-man leading group that Yates managed to stick with.
Simon Geschke (CCC-Team) rolled off the front of this breakaway with 46km to go, before Yates caught him 20km later.
The pair worked well together until the latter attacked near the top of the Mur de Péguère climb 8.7km to the finish.
He dropped Geschke and maintained his solo lead all the way to the line on the eve of the second rest day.
In the general classification, Geraint Thomas (Ineos) gained time on overall leader Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick-Step), but still trails the Frenchman by 1:25.
“It’s kind of a difficult one, tactics-wise, because I wanted to go, I had the legs to go but I wasn’t going to chase down Egan [Bernal] with the guys in the wheel.”
Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma) kept hold of his third place after finishing the stage in eighth place.
