Belgian Wout van Aert, who was injured in a crash last Friday during the individual time-trial on stage 13 of the Tour de France, was released from the Pau hospital yesterday.
According to a statement by his Jumbo-Visma team, Van Aert had surgery on an injured leg and was placed under observation for four days.
The two-time Tour stage winner (including the team time-trial) would be transferred to a second hospital, the statement said.
In a tweet by the 24-year-old, he said all was going well considering the circumstances, although the disappointment he felt at having to quit the tour was intense.
Van Aert crashed a kilometre from the finish of the ITT when he clipped fencing on the side of the road through a right-hand corner.
Doctors have recommended he take two months off to recover from his injuries.
