Belgian Eddy Merckx, regarded as the most successful rider in the history of competitive cycling, is in intensive care after falling during a bike ride.
The 74-year-old suffered serious head injuries and was admitted to Dendermonde hospital in Belgium yesterday.
Further tests will be done today, according to a report on sporza.
The former road and track rider has 11 Grand Tour victories under his belt, including five Tour de France wins, five Giro d’Italia titles and one Vuelta a Espana victory.
He has also won all five Monuments – the Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia.
Other achievements in his illustrious career include three world championships, the hour record and every major one-day event other than Paris-Tours.
