“I wasn’t feeling great before the race. I had a stomach bug for the last two days,” Buys told In the Bunch.
“So I thought I’d just do the event as a training ride.”
Buys, 31, who won the Big Five MTB Challenge last week, tackled the 60km men’s race in the lead-up to the Cape Epic which takes place on March 15.
“I’m not sure how many times I’ve done this race but I think this was my best result yet,” he said.
The PYGA Euro Steel rider rode together with du Toit and Venter for most of the event before they started pulling ahead and attacking.
“I just ran out of energy in the last 10km.
“I am happy that Arno could pull off the win.”
