Jaco Venter, who finished second in The MTB Challenge today, says he gained valuable experience in the lead-up to the Cape Epic in a few weeks’ time.
“I wanted to get a good amount of mountain bike racing experience before I compete in the Epic,” Venter told In the Bunch.
“It’s also close to my home. The event is very enjoyable and well organised.”
The 33-year-old has competed in The MTB Challenge before, but this year he enjoyed his best result yet.
Venter finished second behind Arno du Toit, with Philip Buys completing the podium.
“I did the race years ago, but I don’t remember where I finished. I would say I definitely got my best result here today.
“I just handled it like any other race. I enjoy racing and getting more experience in mountain biking.”
The Team First Move rider was with Du Toit and Buys for much of the race.
“It was mostly just Philip, Arno and myself together for most of the day. When there was about 8km to go we started attacking for a bit, but Arno came out the strongest.
“The conditions were very good. The route is also really nice to work with.”
