Since its launch in the Southern African market in late 2017, HEAD Bikes SA has established itself as a highly credible option while attracting a significant share of the local market.
It operates under the international HEAD Bikes brand, a European operation that has long been established as one of the leading sports-brand suppliers in the world.
After introducing the bicycle range to the European market in 2012, HEAD Bikes expanded its reach to 23 countries and granted the sole distribution rights for South Africa to Johannesburg-based Positive Sports Solutions (PSS).
HEAD of the field in SA
Spokesman Jaco Smit said the HEAD brand was an immediate hit locally and PSS, a distributor of premium cycling products, was also the choice of bicycle for the professional women’s cycling team, Demacon, in 2018.
“In a very successful partnership the outfit won 17 of the 18 races in which they participated on the national calendar that year, underlining the value and credibility of the brand,” he said.
HEAD Bikes SA took this a step further last year when it appointed brand ambassadors to promote the models it has on offer.
The latest appointments are three-time Cape Town Cycle Tour champion Nolan Hoffman, David Maree and Steven van Heerden – incidentally the gold, silver and bronze medal winners at the recent SA Omnium Track Championships.
Another ambassador under the HEAD Bikes SA umbrella is Frances Janse van Rensburg, who won the U23 road and time-trial titles at the national championships in February.
Committed to development
The company, explained Smit, also had a strong commitment to help develop the next generation of stars.
“We have a passion to help develop fresh talent and as such we are supporting junior and youth mountain-bike teams who compete in the major events around the country.” These include, he said, the national SA MTB Cup Series, Schools MTB League and Trailseeker Series.
Just landed
To promote the brand among locals, HEAD will continue to showcase its bicycles at all major events. However, the full range of road and mountain bikes are only available for purchase through PSS’s e-commerce portal.
Smit said the latest road and mountain-bike models will be available from mid-March. Customers can log in to the website to view pricing and specifications and for pre-orders.
