The 21-stage Giro d’Italia may have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but technology has made it possible for fans to join their heroes in action in a virtual racing environment.

And those with the right indoor training equipment will even be able to ride “alongside” former legends of the race and contemporary stars.
The 2020 Giro d’Italia was to have taken place from May 9 to 31. It would have been the 103rd edition of the Grand Tour stage race.
It may have been postponed indefinitely but you are “virtually” certain of being able to enjoy something of this historic event, and the first instalment takes place this weekend.
The Giro d’Italia Legends race will see ex-pro legends of the sport cycle the closing kilometres of the Giro’s Giovinazzo to Vieste stage alongside fans from 5pm today.
The public – those with access to a smart trainer and cycle computer – will be able to join the event, riding the final 37.4km of this year’s 198km ninth stage.
Stars of the past who will take part include Mario Cipollini, Gianni Bugno, Francesco Moser, Giuseppe Saronni, Stefano Garzelli, Ivan Basso and Claudio Chiappucci.
This event will serve as a “prologue” to the Giro d’Italia Virtual, which will take place over seven stages between April 18 and May 10.
Riders will be able to join the professionals on all seven stages of this event.
These two events will give fans the opportunity to experience the excitement of the Giro virtually as the world continues to fight to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.
