A new date has been set for this year’s Tour de France following its postponement due to a government ban on all large-scale events until mid-July.
President Emmanuel Macron announced the ban on Monday as part of the fight against the spread of the coronavirus.
The new date for the 21-stage Grand Tour is from August 29 until September 20.
It was initially scheduled to take place from June 27 till July 19.
The Tour will follow the same route as originally planned, from Nice to Paris.
The women’s race, La Course by le Tour de France, which was due to take place on the Champs Elysees on July 19, was also postponed to a date that is still to be determined.
The organisers said in a statement released today that they would like to thank all of cycling’s stakeholders, the Tour de France’s partners, its broadcasters as well as all of the local authorities for their cooperation and support.
“We all hope that the 2020 Tour de France will help to turn the page on the difficult period we are currently experiencing.”
