Gustav Basson continued to shine in his comeback from serious injury when he won the Cycle4Cansa road classic at Sun City in North West yesterday.
In the 103km feature race, the ProTouch sprinter proved to be the fastest finisher from a small leading group.
The 24-year-old, who impressed in February when he finished fourth at the elite national championships while still feeling his way back to full fitness, crossed the line in 2:13:09 to get the better of Alex Worsdale (OfficeGuru).
The latter again had to settle for silver in a big road classic after placing second in last year’s 947 Ride Joburg.
Dusty Day (Barzani), who was runner-up last year, finished third.
This year’s Cape Town Cycle Tour silver medallist, Frances Janse van Rensburg (Head Bikes-Positive Sports Solutions), won the women’s race in 2:26:27 after dispatching Carla Oberholzer (Bizkaia Durango) in a two-up sprint. Tiffany Keep (Valley Electrical-Titan Racing) rolled home in third in 2:33:03.
