Matt Beers claimed a close victory in the Race to the Sun gravel bike race that took riders from Hartbeespoort Dam to Sun City in North West on Saturday.
The 26-year-old NanoTime rider, who was the only rider to break five hours in this year’s Attakwas, finished the third edition of the 162km race in 4:39:58. He was closely followed by teammate Wessel Botha (4:40:01) and ProTouch’s Calvin Beneke (4:40:44).
Robyn de Groot (dormakaba), the bronze medallist in last year’s UCI MTB Marathon World Championships, ground her way to the top position in the women’s race. She crossed the line in 4:50:28, with the rest of the podium positions going to Galieo Risk Infiniti’s Theresa Ralph (5:04:57) and BMC-Vifit’s Emma Pallant (5:12:09).
