Drikus Coetzee and Michelle Vorster took the men’s and women’s overall victories at the Tour de Windhoek in Namibia over the weekend.
After two road stages, a team time-trial and a criterium, Team Hollard Life’s Coetzee (5:04:09) beat MBM Racing’s Tristan de Lange by two seconds in the general classification. De Lange’s teammate Hugo Hahn placed third in 5:05:49.
Coetzee and De Lange were credited with the same times in the two road stages and criterium, which all went to sprints. Coetzee gained his two-second advantage in the team time-trial.
In the women’s race, Vorster (Pupkewitz Megabuild) dominated throughout to beat Risa Dreyer and Genevieve Weber (both MBM Racing) by a handsome margin.
The tour was without South African teams for the first time since 2017 due to Coronavirus related travel restrictions and was shortened from a three-day, five-stage to a two-day, four-stage event.
