David Maree‘s track background came to good use when he sprinted to victory in the men’s feature race at the Satellite Classic in Magaliesburg this morning.
The Team Enza pro crossed the line in the 106km race in 2:27:34 to get the better of Flavio Venceslau (TEG Pro Cycling) and Jaco van Dyk.
The latter claimed the hot spot sprint out on the route while Joburg Classic champion Myles van Musschenbroek took the king of the mountains points.
Joanna van de Winkel (Cycle Nation), who placed second in last week’s Joburg Classic, successfully defended her title in the women’s race in 2:56:24. She also took the king of the mountains jersey.
Parys Edwards, who claimed the hot spot sprint, finished second.
After placing fourth at the Joburg Classic, Azulde Britz continued with her recent good form to place third.
“It’s a hard course and it showed today,” said Maree.
“Closer to the line there were bigger and bigger gaps opening up with every attack.
“As I was without teammates today, I had to pick what moves I would follow and managed to time it well. Once there was a gap in the group I knew I had a very good chance.
“In the last few kilometres I just tried to pull on all my experience to pull it off. I knew exactly what to do and where to use my effort in the sprint and it paid off perfectly.
“I could not have had a more perfect sprint today.”
