Francois Geldenhuys set a new course record when he sprinted to victory in the tough 90km Steak Race in Port Elizabeth today.
The experienced local crossed the line in 2:19:38 to beat Marco Joubert (Imbuko-Giant) in a two-up sprint, shaving around five minutes off the previous mark.
Triathlete Jamie Riddle, riding in only his second road race, perhaps showed his lack of experience by doing too much grafting early on and eventually paid the price to finish just over three minutes down.
“This week was the first back on the bike for me,” Joubert, better known as a mountain biker, said afterwards.
“From the gun we just sort of worked together to have a hard race.
“Francois, Jamie and myself broke away from most of the guys when we reached the climb at Van Stadens and then we managed to drop Jamie as well.
“From that point it was just me and Francois dashing towards the finish. It ended up being a sprint finish and I just didn’t have the leg speed this time.”
