The 2021 Cape Town Cycle Tour has officially been postponed to later this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic organisers announced today.
In an official statement, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust said the safety of participants and well-being of the broader community of Cape Town were priorities when it came to the planning and staging of the world’s largest timed cycle race.
The organisers had been monitoring the developments around the “second wave” of the virus while working hand-in-hand with authorities and stakeholders for the past few months, the statement read.
It was hoped that a significantly revised version of the Cape Town Cycle Tour could be staged in March, but the circumstances made a mass participation event in any format impossible.
The organisers said they would continue to explore options and opportunities that will allow them to host a safe and memorable event later this year.
Travis Barrett (OfficeGuru) and Cherise Willeit (Customized Cycling) won the men’s and women’s races last year.
