Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard won stage five of the UAE Tour today when he caught breakaway hopeful Alexey Lutsenko with the finish line of the summit of Jebel Jais in sight.
The elated Jumbo-Visma rider said post-race, “I timed my last effort quite well. I was thinking it was a little bit easy in the peloton.
“The group slowed down and I saw Lutsenko was within reach. Luckily, I was able to beat him in the sprint.
The 22-year-old Slovenia said, “I was more focusing on the GC guys than on the stage win.
“There was a lot of riding into a headwind uphill today so it was hard to follow all the attacks.
“I’m glad I’ve retained the lead, but I’ll stay focused in the next two days. There are no more mountains, but I haven’t won the UAE Tour yet.”
Pogacar picked up two bonus seconds on Yates to extend his overall lead to 45 seconds with two stages remaining.
Friday’s penultimate stage will see the riders cover 168km of flat road from Deira Island to Palm Jumeirah.
