South African star cyclist Ryan Gibbons went to the African Continental Road Championships with the objective of picking up “some UCI points” – and collected four gold medals for his efforts.
“Getting the all-clear to do the African champs, especially at the start of the European racing season, was a bit of a challenge,” explained the current national champion, who won his medals in the individual time-trial, team time-trial, mixed relay and road race.
“The team obviously sees the value in it because of the UCI points and I was pretty confident I would be able to get a few points here.”
The 26-year-old, who went in the main break at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in Belgium the previous weekend “to test the legs and get a good workout before the champs”, said he did not expect it to go as well as it did.
