Alan Hatherly entered the second round of the SA XCO Cup at Thaba Trails in Johannesburg today as the overwhelming favourite for victory and duly delivered, but was made to work for his top step on the podium.
Hatherly, who represented South Africa at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, completed the seven-lap course in a time of 1:33:32.
Wessel Botha took second 16 seconds behind, with Philip Buys in third, 54 seconds behind the winner.
Twenty-five-year-old Hatherly had won the opening round of the SA XCO Cup earlier in the month at Summerplace Farm in Limpopo by 2:30 and was expected to coast to a second win with relative ease.
