I was once a member of the PE Cycling Club and it is great news to see it being saved by passionate individuals who respect the history of the sport.
Still remember going to Henry Smith’s house in Framesby to hand in my application in the mid eighties. That was the day I became a proper licensed cyclist.
A couple of years later I got a weekend and holiday job at the local cycling store, which was affiliated to the Walmer Cycling Club. The deal was that I could have the job if I changed clubs.
Those days it was a bit of a status symbol to belong to a club and it certainly differentiated you from the fun riders. But, alas, the wheel has turned and now I’m back to riding for fun.
