The South African men’s cycling team got their African Games campaign off to a great start with gold in the team time-trial in Brazzaville, Congo, on Thursday.

Team SA riders HB Kruger, Gustav Basson, Shaun-Nick Bester and Reynard Butler blitzed through the three laps of the 12.5km circuit on the narrow gravel streets of the old town section in the capital to take the win in 29:31.
Algeria claimed a close second in 29:50, with Rwanda rounding out the team time-trial podium in 30:30.
The South African women’s team did the country proud with silver in the 25km time-trial.
Lise Olivier, Heidi Dalton, Zanele Tshoko and Catherine Colyn finished just four seconds short of winners Nigeria, who took gold in 37:12.
The bronze medal went to Ethiopia in 37:22.
The individual time-trial follows on Friday, with the women’s and men’s road race events taking place on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
