Philip Buys and Matthys Beukes delivered outstanding performances to win stage three and the overall Wines2Whales Race title when the three-day event finished at Onrus Caravan Park in Hermanus today.
The PYGA EuroSteel pair started the final stage six seconds behind leaders Konny Looser and Christoph Sauser, but were able to build up a two-minute gap between them and the Investec-Songo.info duo en route today.
They finished the 72km stage in 2:30:08, with an overall time of 7:59:48. Their achievement is the first time the event has been completed in less than eight hours.
“We were never going to give up and we planned today well and saved our attacks for when they counted most,” said Beukes, who won the National MTB Series last month.
“We really enjoyed today and we’re glad we could end the season with a winner,” said teammate Buys.
Looser and Sauser finished second on the stage and overall, while NAD Pro’s Gawie Combrinck and Nico Bell finished third overall.
The women’s race was won by Meerdendal CBC’s Jennie Stenerhag and Adelheid Morath after they finished second today. The valuable seconds they gained after their first and only stage victory on day one, coupled with consistent riding, was enough to secure overall victory.
“I said to Adelheid before the race that usually this is won on the first day. Even though it was only 20 seconds, we were able to keep that lead,” said Stenerhag.
