Investec-Songo-Specialized’s Jaroslav Kulhavy and Howard Grotts were crowned this year’s Cape Epic champions after the last stage finished at Val de Vie in the Western Cape, today.
Canyon Topeak’s Alban Lakata and Kristian Hynek finished in second place overall, while Cannondale Factory Racing’s Manuel Fumic and Henrique Avancini completed the podium.
“We had a pretty good eight days. We’re really happy and I’m very happy for Howard, who is a newbie here. We will try win again,” said Kulhavy.
Grotts added that he was struggling a bit during the first few days, but then they finally turned a page.
“I could feel comfortable on the climbs and just hang on Jaroslav’s wheel. What I learnt is that it’s not over until it’s over. There was one day when I thought it was done for me – I was completely empty. But, sure enough, you bounce back.”
Trek Selle San Marco’s Fabian Rabensteiner and Michele Casagrande won the 70km stage when they crossed the finish line after 2:47:37.
They were followed home seconds later by the overall winners, while Buff Scott MTB’s Francesc Guerra Carretero and Luis Leao Pinto rounded out the podium for the day.
“It’s amazing, today was a very good day for us. We attacked on the hotspot and decided to go full gas,” said Rabensteiner.
“The group then came back, but on the last climb we went all out again to the finish line. We’re very happy.”
His teammate Casagrande added that it was a beautiful day for them and to have won at Val de View was fantastic as it was a big dream for them.
