Cape Town Cycle Tour organisers confirmed that a cyclist passed away in a collision during the race in the Western Cape today.
According to their statement, the 40-year-old male received immediate medical attention at the scene following an accident involving 20 cyclists on Wynberg Hill.
Unfortunately, his injuries proved fatal.
“A trauma incident happened just before 9am on the M3 southbound in which a group of 20 cyclists were involved in a pile up,” said David Bellairs, Marketing, Media and Sponsorship Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.
“One of the cyclists succumbed to the injuries he sustained in this incident. His family has asked that we respect their privacy at this time and we will not be releasing his name.”
Bellairs announced a second unfortunate incident at a media briefing this afternoon.
“In the second incident a male participant succumbed to a suspected heart attack at Smitswinkel Bay at approximately 10.22am. Once again we are respecting the family’s wishes and not releasing his name.
“Our most sincere condolences go out to the families of both these participants.”
