Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde sprinted to victory on the second stage of Volta a Catalunya in Valls, west of Barcelona, yesterday.
The Spaniard beat South African Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) and Australian Jay McCarthy (Bora-Hansgrohe) to the line.

Egan Bernal (Team Sky) took fourth on the day, with Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Merida) rounding out the top five.
“It was a great day, there was a lot of pressure on us because the headwind slowed the race but the team worked extremely well,” said Valverde.
The stage winner also holds the overall lead, with McCarthy in second and Impey in third.
“Tomorrow is going to be a very tough day. Now I’ve got the lead and so we’re going to try and keep it.”
