New Zealand’s Sam Gaze won the Commonwealth Games men’s cross-country race at the Nerang Mountain Bike Trails in Gold Coast today.
Gaze, who won the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Stellenbosch two months ago, narrowly beat compatriot Anton Cooper to the line in 1:17:36. South Africa’s Alan Hatherly won bronze in 1:17:56.

Hatherly stayed neck-and-neck with the two New Zealanders in the closing stages of the race, with Gaze and Cooper having played their own game of cat-and-mouse.
Cooper led the race as they headed into the final lap, before Gaze shot past just before the finish line.
Hatherly managed to hold his own to prevent an all-New Zealand podium, finishing just less than a minute ahead of Ben Oliver.
In the women’s race, South African Mariske Strauss placed seventh with a time of 1:22:50.
