Richie Porte has abandoned the Tour de France after crashing out of stage nine today.
Porte, who rides for BMC Racing, crashed in the bunch less than 10km into the stage. He reportedly broke his collarbone as a result.
The Australian last year also crashed out of the French Grand Tour in stage nine when he hit a rock wall on a descent.
Porte recently won the Tour de Suisse, a race depicted as one of the major “trial” events in the build up to the Tour de France. He headed into the stage 10th on the general classification standings.
