South Africa’s Ryan Gibbons just missed a place on the podium in the 160km African Continental Road Championships road race in Sebat Amit, Ethiopia, today.
Gibbons finished fourth in the final bunch sprint in 3:50:12. His Dimension Data teammate, Mekseb Debesay from Eritrea, won the race in 3:49:48, with Algeria’s Azzedine Lagab and Youcef Reguigui finishing second and third respectively.

Gibbons reportedly surged into third-place with 100m to go, passing a Burkina Faso rider, before Reguigui came around late to pip him on the line.
Jayde Julius, also of SA, finished within the bunch, placing eighth.
SA’s Joanna van de Winkel placed third in the elite women’s 104.4km race, finishing behind Ethiopia’s Eyeru Tesfoam Gebru and Eritrea’s Mosana Debesay in second and first respectively.
