Colombian Fernando Gaviria abandoned this year’s Giro d’Italia 50km into the 185km seventh stage that started in Vasto, Italy, today.
UAE Team Emirates confirmed that Gaviria, who won the third stage after Elia Viviani was relegated, left the race due to knee pain.

The 24-year-old, who placed second in this year’s Three Days of Bruges-De Panne, was lying 110th overall.
His departure from the tour is also a loss for GC leader Valerio Conti, who now only has five riders to help him look after the Maglia Rosa.
