The South African team that will compete in this year’s UCI Junior Track Cycling World Championships from August 14 to 18 in Frankfurt, Germany, have been announced by Cycling SA.
“There are two ways to qualify for the national team – winning an African Continental Track Championship or hitting the national time standards,” said junior national high performance manager Kurt Begemann.
He added it was important to know that at the world champs the team events were held on the same day during the same session.
“Athletes cannot focus on both discipline styles, so therefore they’ve been allocated to either a sprint or endurance team.”
Begemann said going to worlds was self-funded and therefore it was in the athletes’ best interest to compete in as many events as possible while they were there.
“With this in mind, I have given our stronger athletes three events and the others two.”
