The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) received a massive response from the public to an online survey they launched earlier this month into issues affecting professional road racing.
More than 22 300 people expressed their opinions on the state of the discipline and what they would like to see occur in the sport’s future development.
The five best-represented countries were the United States, France, Spain, Belgium and Italy.
“The consultation launched by the UCI to assess public opinion on the appeal of road cycling and expectations regarding its future gave all interested parties an opportunity, for the first time, to express their thoughts,” said UCI president David Lappartient.
He added that the huge number of responses was cause for satisfaction and provided an excellent foundation for them to build on, together with all stakeholders, to make road cycling more interesting and popular.
“Thank you to everyone who has played their part in the ongoing modernisation of our sport.”
The process will continue with interviews with people from cycling’s extended families and discussions with team representatives, riders, organisers, media groups and broadcasters.
Proposals will then be drawn up and presented to the Professional Cycling Council and the UCI management committee for their approval next year.
