A full explanation of why yesterday’s Stellenbosch Cycle Tour had to be cancelled at the last minute has been provided by the organisers.
With the Cape experiencing extremely windy conditions at the weekend, an emergency meeting was called early yesterday morning to discuss whether the event should go ahead on the day.
The meeting was held with the safety officer of the venue operations centre, the event’s title sponsor, the Pedal Power Association (PPA) management, as well as the risk assessment and event managers from ER24.

With wind gusting up to 95km/h across the 97km route, the PPA said they were compelled to cancel the event to ensure the safety of the more than 3 000 riders.
“It is truly disappointing that we were forced to cancel the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour due to these extreme weather conditions,” said Rens Rezelman, chairman of the PPA.
“Being one of our flagship events, a lot of time and effort has gone into the preparation of this event. The PPA, however, places the safety of cyclists first and foremost.
“We would like to thank everyone for entering the race as well as all our suppliers, sponsors and partners for being so understanding on the day.”
