Keagan Bontekoning, who recently joined the Insect Science Mountain Bike team for the 2020 season, has set his sights on some important goals.
The 20-year-old said these included learning and growing as an athlete.
“I would also like to achieve personal goals in XCO racing as well as try to be a consistent top contender for the marathon races.”

Bontekoning, who won the Cradle Mountain Express MTB race at the beginning of the year, said he planned on delivering “great results” for the team.
“At the same time [I intend] being a good ambassador for the brands that I’m representing.”
The Stellenbosch resident felt he was a good fit for the team because he was a well-rounded and consistent rider.
“I’ve raced on the road, XCO and now marathon and I think I can bring all of that experience into the team and be competitive.
“It has always been a goal of mine to race for a professional team and now that I have the opportunity I will definitely take full advantage of it.
“I believe that having the support and backing [of a team] at races will play a massive role in me delivering good results and it is also great motivation to try and make the team a force to be reckoned with.”
Bontekoning, who will be joined by Alan Gordon and CP van Wyk, said he felt excited to be in a team alongside them.
“They both have a great amount of experience and they will definitely teach me a lot and push me to be my best.
“There are still many lessons I have to learn, but being surrounded by two very experienced teammates is an amazing opportunity for me to learn and grow as an athlete.
“I’m very excited to be joining them. We’re all very passionate cyclists and it’s something that has taken a lot of work to achieve. I’m excited to see where the team can take me and it’s also great to have full support in my cycling.”
