Having just been named sportsman of the year for 2019 as well as junior rider of the year at the Gauteng North Cycling awards, Damon Fouchee is now aiming to reach new heights in Spain during the 2020 season.
Fouchee recently joined the GSport team based in Valencia, Spain.
“My focus is on the Spanish racing season this year. I will take part in the U23 Spanish Cup, which is a selection of races and tours for U23 riders in Spain,” Fouchee told In the Bunch.
“I’m planning to build my form to the highest level possible and to give my best throughout the season.”

Before heading to Spain, the 18-year-old will make his debut in the U23 category at the South African national championships next month.
“I’m quite nervous entering the U23 category this year, but I’m looking forward to it. It is a big and exciting step in my career. The pace will be hard and the distances of the races will be longer as well.”
Fouchee says he will be taking part in the road race as well as the time-trial at the SA champs but has no great expectations as he is placing all his focus on the Spanish Cup.
“The route looks flat yet challenging. I believe the wind will play a huge role on the day as long stretches of gutters can be expected.
“The biggest challenge for me will be to adapt to the new level of racing. Adapting in a foreign country will be a huge challenge as well,” he said.
“My plan is to continue with cycling full time, chasing my dream to become a professional road cyclist. Entering university is still part of my long-term plan though.”
