Timo Cooper targets victory at Summer Fast One

January 10, 2020, 10:06 am By In the Bunch

Timo Cooper is eyeing the top step of the podium at the Summer Fast One on Sunday, especially since a new winner will definitely be crowned in the absence of Jan Withaar.

Cooper, who finished less than a minute behind Withaar in the 65km mountain bike event at Rand Water Grounds in Gauteng last year, said this was always the first race of the season for him.

“It’s difficult to set a goal for this event as I’m not sure how strong I am compared to the other riders, but I’ll always give it my all for a top result.”

The 28-year-old felt his race went well last year, but due to some changes in the route he was unsure what to expect this time round.

“The route was very fast with a lot of open sections. I have heard that the route has changed, with it now including more singletrack sections and this will change tactics a bit.

“The old route was flat and fast, while the new route includes more climbing and technical sections.”

He was uncertain precisely what tactics to adopt. “I do think the route suits my riding ability and style, but I’m not 100% sure.”

Cooper joined the Darkhorse Wheels Pro Cycling team last year and felt this had given him added motivation to produce results.

“The team have only been positive about my riding and racing and I really appreciate them believing in me for the 2020 season.

“Joining the team, or any team for that matter, puts pressure on a rider to race for results.

“Good results are always good for the brands that support our team and lead to exposure as well.”

He added that the team had also helped him plan his season a bit better this year.

“I’ll be racing less, but focusing on getting great results with my set goals.

“I’ll take part in all the Trailseeker events and sani2c during the first part of the season.

“The first big goals for the year include Attakwas and the Barberton XCM MTB Challenge.”
