Racing legend Anriette Schoeman hopes to do her home town of Port Elizabeth proud with a podium finish at the Herald Cycle Tour on Sunday.
The 42-year-old has won the 106km event no fewer than 17 times, her last victory coming in 2017.
And when she doesn’t win, she’s not far behind. She placed second in both 2018 and last year.
She says riding in her home town is always special.
“Racing in front of my home crowd makes it very important for me,” Schoeman told In the Bunch.
“It’s also one of my favourite events on the calendar as it’s so well organised and the hospitality of the event organisers has been amazing over the years.
“It’s always special to do well in front of my home crowd and I would love to get a good result.”
Schoeman, who rides for team BestMed, says that while the route is challenging it also boasts some beautiful views.
“The race itself is safe, with full road closure, and it’s very scenic. The vibe at prize-giving is also very festive.
“The route is quite challenging in the first half of the race and most of the tricky climbs are in the first bit. But once you hit the Maitlands climb in the last 40km the wind is from behind and the route is fairly flat towards the finish.”
She says that her strategy will depend on the weather conditions, as the wind in Port Elizabeth can have a huge effect closer to the finish.
“It is always sensible to ride more reserved at the start and keep something for the finish, but the weather conditions ultimately determine my strategy for the day. If there is a headwind in the last 30km it’s a whole different approach.
“The main obstacle is the climbing in the first third of the race, but it’s hard for everyone.”
Schoeman is anticipating a great race on Sunday and a very festive atmosphere from the crowd as well.
“I’m just really looking forward to a great day of racing and mixing with everyone who loves this sport as much as I do.
“As much as I would love a great result, my love for sharing my passion still outweighs my desire to win.”
