The 33.1km stage, which started in Fiesch and finished atop Nufenen Pass, was won by Sunweb’s Nicolas Roche.
Ilnur Zakarin (CCC Team) finished 1:10 behind Roche, with Lawrence Warbasse (AG2R la Mondiale) third.
“That was a very, very difficult and intense race – it was on from the beginning,” said Roche.
“I just had to pace myself because I had Michal [Kwiatkowski], Zakarin and Warbasse just behind me on the climb. I could see I wasn’t able to gain much space on them but I was riding steadily and basing my effort on them behind.
“The climb and effort was a bit longer than I expected and the last 3km were absolutely horrible. I’m quite happy, it was a good effort for us and the team. I wanted to commit to this and I’m happy it’s worked out.”
Tonight’s stage will cover 36.8km, from Oberlangenegg to Langnau.
