Cycling superstar Peter Sagan endured a rather painful 31st birthday this week.
Rather than take an off-day to celebrate, Sagan went on a six-hour pre-season training ride.
The Bora-Hansgrohe rider unfortunately took a tumble, posting pictures of cuts to his shin, forearm and elbow to his social media.
He later thank well-wishers.
“I would like to say thank you very much for all the beautiful wishes you sent me,” he said.
“I had a beautiful ride – six hours – in this beautiful weather. I got some new scratches and scars on my skin, but I’m still alive – that’s good. For sure I’m going to remember this day.”
Sagan, who has won 17 stages in total in Grand Tours, boasts a record seven green jersey victories at the Tour de France.
The Slovakian was, however, denied an eighth win at last year’s race by Irish rider Sam Bennett.
Sagan faces a big season ahead with reclaiming the Tour de France green jersey and gold at the Tokyo Olympics no doubt high on his list of 2021 goals.
