Cycling South Africa has today issued an update on the 2021 SA National Road Championships.
In a statement, Cycling SA confirmed that the national championships, scheduled for March 18 to 21 in Swellendam “remain on the national events calendar”.
The governing body added that in a joint decision with the Swellendam municipality, a call will be made on the event going ahead either 30 days before its scheduled start or after the country has been placed on a lower level of Covid-19 lockdown.
The current coronavirus restrictions in place don’t allow for mass gatherings which has a direct impact on the number of event participants permitted, thus making for an unfair representation of a national championship.
Cycling SA concluded by sympathising with the frustrations of cyclists and supporters, but reminded of the need to abide with the regulations as set out by government.
Ryan Gibbons and Daryl Impey are the reigning national men’s elite road and individual time-trial champions, respectively.
Ashleigh Moolman is the defending women’s SA national road and ITT champion.
