The Rapport Tour, which was due to make a long-awaited return to the cycling calendar in March this year, has been postponed.
After an absence of 20 years, organisers had hoped to stage the five-day race from March 7 to 11 in the Western Cape, culminating two days before the Cape Town Cycle Tour.
The Cape Town Cycle Tour itself was postponed to later in the year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year’s tour will coincide with the 50-year anniversary of the iconic Rapport newspaper.
Staged from 1973 to 2000, the Rapport Tour is the only fully-fledged international cycling tour that South Africa has hosted.
Names engraved on the trophy include several of South Africa’s greatest ever cyclists, among others, Robbie McIntosh, Alan van Heerden, Mark and Gary Beneke and Willie Engelbrecht.
Cycling South Africa (CSA) confirmed to In the Bunch today that the race had been postponed to later in the year.
“Yes, the Rapport Tour has been postponed to late September or early October,” a CSA spokesperson said.
“Once the Cape Town Cycle Tour has confirmed its new date, the Rapport Tour will slot in the week prior.”
