Even though Travis Barrett’s confidence will be sky-high after his gold-medal performance at the African champs, he is aware of the extreme challenge that lies ahead at the SA National Road Championships in Swellendam on Sunday.
The 21-year-old, who won the U23 road race title in Cairo after placing 10th in the combined Elite/U23 event, said the entry lists for the individual time-trial (40km) and road race (178km) were strong and that he would need to be at his very best in both disciplines.
“Being crowned African U23 road champ was definitely a huge boost before the nationals but, with that said, it won’t make the SAs any easier,” said the all-rounder from Edenvale, who announced himself as a star in the making when he won the Cape Town Cycle Tour last year.
