Basson, 23, who was involved in a car accident two weeks ago, was placed back under deeper sedation by doctors after it was earlier lifted due to him fighting against the pipe in his throat.
“Gustav has extreme pain and is very nauseous and sick. The nausea is from the infection in his lungs,” said his mother in a statement this morning.
“I feel so sorry for him if he tries to open his eyes and ask for help and I can’t do anything to make him feel better,” she said.
Basson, who won the sprinter’s jersey at the Tour of Good Hope in March, was driving in a vehicle with a friend when someone crashed into the back of them.
He broke his right upper femur which was successfully operated on, but has been battling with a lung infection.
More details and updates will be posted.
