South African cyclist Gustav Basson, who was involved in a car accident last week, was operated on in Middelburg this morning and is currently under sedation.
According to his mother, the operation was a success. The doctor is still concerned about his lungs, but they are keeping a careful eye on him, she said.
He managed to open his eyes after the operation to speak to his mom.
“Please keep Gustav in your prayers for a full and speedy recovery,” said Craig Bezuidenhout of Safety Initiative Road Rangers.
Basson, who won the sprinter’s jersey at the Tour of Good Hope in March, was driving in a vehicle with a friend when someone rammed into the back of them.
The 23-year-old broke his right upper femur.
