A memorial ride and service has been planned for tomorrow in honour of Wicus Kotze who died following an accident during the Cycle4Cansa road race at Sun City.
The ride in honour of the Bestmed Medical Scheme executive from Pretoria starts officially at The Bicycle Company, Centurion, at 10am. But the main meeting point will be the Glen Fair Shopping Centre at 11.30am.
Cyclists will do a 5km loop in the area towards the NG Church Lynwood Ridge, where his memorial service will commence at noon.
Riders will then either head back to Glen Fair for those who parked there, or continue on to The Bicycle Company.
Kotze was part of a group of cyclists who were struck from behind by a minibus during the race on August 25.
He received immediate medical attention for a serious head injury. He was then rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to try and stop the haemorrhaging.
The driver was arrested at the scene.
“We are very grateful for the support that we as family have received from the cycling community during this time – it has been very special,” said Kotze’s son, Wicus.
“It’s a very painful and difficult thing that has happened, but all the support has helped. It doesn’t change the situation, but we do appreciate it.
“My dad loved cycling a lot and he really enjoyed the sport in the last couple of years, especially taking part in road events. The support would’ve meant a lot to him.”
