South Africa missed out on adding to their medal tally in the junior men’s road race at the African Continental Road Championships in Cairo, Egypt, today.
Justin Chesterton was the leading SA finisher in ninth place, while his teammate Chanton Perrins was taken to hospital after crashing out of the race.
Thankfully he was discharged with X-rays showing no collarbone break.
South Africa’s other finishers in the race over 84km were Pedri Crause (12th) and Jason Bruintjies (18th).
Rwanda’s Etienne Tuyizere took victory ahead of Morocco’s Mohammed Sanbouli. Samuel Niyonkuru from Rwanda completed the podium in a memorable day for the East Africa country.
Earlier in the day SA’s Chanté Olivier won the junior women’s road race for her third gold medal of the championships.
Saturday’s final day of the 15th annual championships will see the men’s and women’s elite and U23 road races take place.
