Chris Froome’s lieutenant Wout Poels surged to victory on stage seven of the Criterium du Dauphine in Pipay, France, today.
The Team Ineos rider (4:01:34) let out a big roar as he crossed the finish of the 133km stage, which started in Saint-Genix-les-Villages earlier.
Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang came in second to take the overall lead from Britain’s Adam Yates, who finished in sixth today.
Third on the stage was German Emanuel Buchmann, who lies fourth overall.
American Tejay Van Garderen maintained his third overall position after finishing ninth today.
Poels’ stage victory awarded him a big jump from tenth to fifth in the overall standings.
He said afterwards that the win felt “really nice for the team” and that it was a gift for his teammate Chris Froome who suffered a crash at the Dauphine earlier this week.
In other news, Tom Dumoulin has quit the Dauphine after he experienced some irritation in his knee which he injured at the Giro d’Italia.
